Ireland is not in the Schengen Area
This is the point that catches people out first. Ireland has opted out of Schengen, so an Irish residence permit gives you no Schengen travel rights on its own, and a Schengen visa gives you no right to enter or remain in Ireland. The two systems are separate, and holding status in one tells you nothing about the other.
What living in Ireland does give you is the right to apply from here. Irish citizens, EU and EEA nationals, and non-EU residents with valid immigration permission can all generally apply through the consulate, embassy or visa application centre that serves Ireland-based applicants for their destination country.
Everything runs through Dublin
Unlike the UK, where four cities host application centres, Schengen appointment capacity for Ireland is concentrated in Dublin. There is no second city to fall back on when the calendar is full, which removes one of the most effective tactics available to applicants elsewhere — checking another location.
The practical consequence is that timing matters more here than geography. You cannot widen your search across cities, so the levers you do have are applying early in the six-month window, keeping travel dates flexible, and catching cancellations when they are released.
Choosing the right consulate is a legal requirement
You must apply through the country where you will spend the most nights, or, if the stay is evenly split, the country you enter first. This is set by the Visa Code, not by preference or convenience.
Applying through whichever country appears to have the emptiest calendar is a common and expensive mistake. Consulates check your itinerary, accommodation and flights against your stated destination, and a mismatch can mean refusal and a lost fee.
